Last fall Porsche took its amazing 911 GT2 RS MR to the famed Nürburgring Norschleife and set a lap record for a street-legal car, and now the world’s most winning sports car manufacturer has set a new production car record on the extremely challenging Road America race course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
The 6.5-kilometre circuit is a fast-paced complexity of high-speed straights, ultra-tight curves and dramatic elevation changes, an ideal 14-turn playground for any 911, albeit perfect for the track-dominating 911 GT2 RS. Attempting to remove the current lap record title from a GT2 RS privateer who set a blistering time of 2:17.04 last year, the factory-stock 700 horsepower GT2 RS claimed the top podium with a new record-setting time of 2:15.17 minutes, chopping nearly 2 seconds (1.87) off the previous record.
Also impressive, it only took 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans class winner David Donohue two laps to accomplish its Road America feat.
Additionally, Porsche brought along a new 911 GT3 RS that, despite being down on power by almost 200 horsepower when compared to the GT2 RS, managed a high-revving (at nearly 9,000 rpm) lap time of 2:18.57 minutes on the same course with the same driver. Similar to the GT2 RS run, the GT3 RS only needed three laps to achieve the optimal pace. What’s more, the less powerful car’s ability to stay as close as it did to the GT2 RS’ time on a track with such long straights and numerous 90-degree turns says a lot about its phenomenal cornering prowess.
The record setting 911 GT2 RS and the impressive GT3 RS were shod with road-legal, Porsche-approved Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 performance tires that are available as upgrades for your RS right here at Porsche Centre Vancouver.
The 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which starts at $334,000, is capable of sprinting from zero to 100km/h in just 2.8 seconds, 0 to 160 km/h in 5.8 seconds, and 80 to 120 km/h in only 1.5 seconds, all before achieving a top speed of 340 km/h.
As if the Nürburgring Norschleife and Road America track records weren’t enough, the same 911 GT2 RS set another production car track record at the ultra-challenging Road Atlanta race course in Braselton, Georgia last month, with Randy Pobst in the driver’s seat, this time managing a lap time of just 1:24.88 minutes, which outpaced the previous record-holding Corvette ZR1 by nearly two seconds, as well as the aforementioned Porsche 911 GT3 RS by 1.36 seconds.
